Sidertaglio Lamiere Srl specializes in cutting thick sheets up to 650 mm. These sheets, available from stock at our warehouses, are produced from ingots. The creation of flat sheets with significant thickness typically involves plastic deformation of the steel semi-product known as a slab.
How are thick sheets produced?
The current record for rolling slab thickness is 500 mm, achieved through continuous casting. However, when producing 650 mm sheets, direct rolling from a slab is impossible. To reduce slab thickness during lamination, an ideal ratio of 1 to 3 is required, meaning a 300 mm slab should be used to create a 100 mm thick sheet.
Technological Advances in Steel Mills
In recent years, steel mills have made significant technological strides. Post-casting production has advanced through the use of laddle furnaces and vacuum degassing, enabling the creation of high-quality slabs. However, when it comes to extremely thick sheets, the primary production method involves using ingots rather than slabs.
From ingot to thick sheet
The process begins with the steelmaker pouring liquid steel, adjusting its chemistry, and casting it into ingot molds. Once the steel cools, the ingot is extracted and prepared for the rolling process.
Before lamination, the ingot is preheated and pressed to reduce its thickness and create the shape required for rolling. In some cases, ingots with initial thicknesses exceeding 1500 mm are used to produce sheets up to 650 mm thick. These are then subjected to normalization heat treatment to ensure the necessary mechanical properties.
Quality control and certification for thick sheets
After rolling, thick sheets undergo ultrasonic testing to ensure internal integrity, and their mechanical properties are verified. These products are certified to 3.1 standards and normalized in the furnace. Additionally, Sidertaglio Lamiere offers “lowered slabs,” an economical alternative available in thicknesses over 300 mm. These come with a chemical analysis certificate 2.1, and further tests can be performed upon request.
